Mayor of Athens
Yorgos Kaminis was elected Mayor of Athens in 2010 and undertook duty in January 2011 while he was reelected in May 2014 for a five year duty.
Before his election as Mayor of Athens he served as Greek Ombudsman (2003-2010). From 1998 to May 2003 he served as Assistant Greek Ombudsman, responsible for Human Rights.
In 2003 he was unanimously elected Greek Ombudsman at a Presidents of Parliament roundtable meeting while he was reelected for a second duty in 2008.
In August 2010 Mr Kaminis announced his resignation and intention to stand as an independent mayoral candidate for the City of Athens.
In December 1990 he was elected lecturer of the University of Athens Law Faculty and in June 1998 assistant professor.
Mr. Kaminis studied Law at the University of Athens while he obtained his postgraduate University Diploma in Public Law (Doctorat d´Etat en Droit) from the University of Paris I. He was born in New York and he has also lived in Osaka, Paris, Madrid and Heidelberg. Apart from his mother tongue, Greek, Mr Kaminis speakes also English, French and Spanish. He is married with two children.
