President of DIAZOMA Association
Stavros Benos was born in Kalamata, 30 December 1947. He is a topographical engineer.
He has served the public life of Greece as a Major of Kalamata (1979-1990), Member of Parliament (representing: Kalamata: 1990-2204, second district of Athens 2004-2007), Deputy Culture Minister at the last government of Andreas Papandreou, Culture Minister, Minister of the Aegean, Deputy Minister of Public Administration at the governments of Costas Simites. One of the most important moments in his career is the reconstruction of Kalamata after the destructive earthquakes in September 1986, a project which received an award from the European Council of Urban Planning for its excellent and people-centered urban reconstruction of Kalamata as well as from Europa Nostra because of the rescue and enhancement-promotion of the monuments of the town. Another important achievement in his career is the establishment and operation of the Center of Citizen Service (Κ.Ε.Π.) and DIAZOMA.
